The year was 2003. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King and Finding Nemo dominated the box office. The Space Shuttle Columbia disaster claimed the lives of 7 astronauts as it tragically broke apart during re-entry. And in April, the Human Genome Project completed its final mapping of the human genome. Around this same time, a young 19-year-old agreed to take over the care of a friend's local window cleaning route, as the friend had married in the prior year and moved with his new wife to a new area — an area outside of a comfortable commute.
That 19-year-old was me. I was nervous and unsure if I could do it, but at the same time, giddy and proud at being hand-picked to carry on a small business, and excited to get started and give it a go. I first would have to expand and travel to new areas, because one small town is not enough to make a living in this line of work. So I went forth and stopped in at many businesses in the small towns surrounding my own. Every time I went to a bigger town, it seemed already locked down by the current window washers in the area. Thus, I had to focus on the small towns — small towns not unlike my own, and probably not unlike the small towns you may call your own. All of the big cities were not willing to take a chance on a fresh-faced newcomer just striking out for the first time. But the small towns were all too happy to have me. They seemed to like that I came out to see them, even if they were often overlooked because of their quaint, unassuming, small-town ways.
They embraced me and my business. It was just a few at first, then a few more, and gradually I realized I could make a whole meal if I just gathered up the crumbs and baked my own small-town flavored pie. These are my people! And I will always be grateful to so many of them — most of them are still customers. Some of whom I have washed windows at their house for a baby shower years ago, and more recently washed that same house for that same baby's graduation party. That is incredible to me. The business did not simply survive for all these decades, but it actually retained many of the same folks from then until now. Truly remarkable.
I was just a young kid with a bucket, ladder, and a station wagon back then. Fast forward to today, and I now have over 240+ monthly scheduled cleanings. It shouldn't have happened. It's unbelievable to me that it could happen... but it did! Through it all, one thing remains the same: I could not have done it without you, the clients. It has been the greatest honor and privilege of my working life to work with you folks, get to know you, and be welcomed into your homes. Thank you for all the encouragement and guidance you gave me as I was learning to be my own boss.
These people, and these past 20+ years, have taught me that I love doing what I do, and who I do it for, so much that whether I am doing it in 90-degree heat or in a -20 polar vortex, it would be my greatest honor to do so for another 20 years.
Outside of my chosen profession, I also write, play, and record my own music — which, if you're interested, can be found under the stage name "Mrs. London's Butler" on most streaming platforms. I also have an impressive collection of shopping lists that I have picked up over the years, starting way back when I worked evenings cleaning the floors at the local grocery store. Almost nightly, I would sweep up at least a list or two. I was always puzzled by these people who would litter and leave their trash for someone else to pick up. At some point, I just started keeping them. Do I feel weird about that? Not at all. They knowingly left it for someone else to pick up — they probably just never accounted for the fact that "someone" would hold onto it.
This, along with many other jobs, kept me afloat as I kept working at building my business, including: making tacos, delivering pizzas, working overnight at a bakery, and of course, the aforementioned floor cleaning. All this happening as my life was also happening. I had children in 2010 and 2014. I have been married and divorced, and was lucky enough to have found love again — I now have a family that includes an amazing wife, 6 kids in total, 3 dogs, an aquatic turtle, a Sulcata tortoise, and about 2 dozen chickens.
And through it all... window cleaning has been there. Sometimes it feels like more than just what I do, but rather who I am. Then again, I am just a person, and one thing I know about persons: they are rarely ever ONE thing. I am no exception. I am all these things, and all these things are me. A different version of myself exists in the minds of everyone who has ever met me — and for most of you folks, I am most honored by the version known as... your Window Guy.
